Building Grit in Kids

Grit is a multi-layered concept that fits into the mold in which it is placed. When I think of the definition in the Merriam-Webster dictionary it is amusing that it can be defined as both an abrasive particle or firmness of character. I find that both are true. There are many theorist who base their ideas upon the concept of grit. One example is Jean Piaget’s Assimilation and Accommodation theory. We participate in the outside world through our experiences and then process it . We might fit it into what we already know or accommodate and adapt the new information to fit what is yet to come. The mold changes and morphs through time and space and is an ever developing structure. As educators, we have to believe that grit is a 21st century skill that we are constantly developing within  our students. As parents, you have to believe that you  are building grit each time you say “no” or make decisions for your middle school child, they might not like. Summer break will be here soon….continue to build grit in your child and help him/her to become strong in character, values, and goals.

Happy Summer

Hello May

We were down to the last seven weeks of school Students will be busy finishing up the curriculum, taking standardized tests, and participating in activities. Today, I can say that we only have four more weeks before break.

Please make sure that your child continues to work on his/her AR points and does not get complacent during the last months of school. Finals will be on June 1,2  and 5.

This journey will soon come to an end ..and the next educational journey will await the new school year. Whether it is back here to middle school or on to high school….we will charge forward on August 14th.

Preparing for testing

Please make sure that your child is getting plenty of rest during testing week. A protein filled breakfast will give him/her the brain power that is needed for concentration. Remember to help your child stay positive with the attitude that he can meet the challenge  head-on and accomplish the task.
